Strength group - green

Unseasoned (green) timbers are assigned one of 7 strength groups: S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest).

Unseasoned (green) timbers are assigned one of 7 strength groups: S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest).

  • Classifications without brackets (i.e. S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7) were determined from mechanical test data using small, clear specimens.
  • Classifications in brackets e.g. (S3) are provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechanical test data.
  • Provisional classifications can be used with confidence as they are assessed conservatively.
  • The strength groups agree with AS/NZS 2878-2000 Timber—classification into strength groups (Standards Australia 2000a).

See the guide: Strength groups & stress grades.

Below are a list of values users can choose for this field group.

  • (S1) - S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest) for unseasoned timber determined using provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechnical test data
  • (S2) - S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest) for unseasoned timber determined using provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechnical test data
  • (S3) - S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest) for unseasoned timber determined using provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechnical test data
  • (S4) - S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest) for unseasoned timber determined using provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechnical test data
  • (S5) - S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest) for unseasoned timber determined using provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechnical test data
  • (S6) - S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest) for unseasoned timber determined using provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechnical test data
  • (S7) - S1 (strongest) to S7 (weakest) for unseasoned timber determined using provisional assessments based on density and/or limited mechnical test data
  • 9 - This timber is non-structural; it does not have a strength group classification.
  • 99 - 99 means the timber is non-structural and so is not assigned to a strength group.
  • MGP - Machine-graded pine
  • S1 - Strength group S1 represents the inherent strength of this timber in the unseasoned (green) condition.
  • S2 - Strength group S2 represents the inherent strength of this timber in the unseasoned (green) condition.
  • S3 - Strength group S3 represents the inherent strength of this timber in the unseasoned (green) condition.
  • S4 - Strength group S4 represents the inherent strength of this timber in the unseasoned (green) condition.
  • S5 - Strength group S5 represents the inherent strength of this timber in the unseasoned (green) condition.
  • S6 - Strength group S6 represents the inherent strength of this timber in the unseasoned (green) condition.
  • S7 - Strength group S7 represents the inherent strength of this timber in the unseasoned (green) condition.
  • SP - Machine-graded structural pine
